Valentine’s Day and Friend’s Day in Finland:
History, Traditions, and Interesting Facts

February 14 is widely known around the world as Valentine’s Day — a celebration of love, romance, and heartfelt emotions. However, in Finland this date has a special meaning. Here it is celebrated primarily as Friend’s Day — Ystävänpäivä, a holiday dedicated not only to romantic partners, but also to friendship, care, and human connection.

The History of Valentine’s Day

The origins of Valentine’s Day date back to ancient times. The holiday is traditionally associated with Saint Valentine, a Christian priest who lived in the 3rd century in the Roman Empire. According to one popular legend, he secretly performed weddings for young couples despite a ban imposed by Emperor Claudius II. For this act, Valentine was imprisoned and later executed.

Over time, Saint Valentine became a symbol of love, loyalty, and self-sacrifice. During the Middle Ages, February 14 began to be associated with romantic love in Europe. By the 19th century, the tradition of exchanging Valentine’s cards had spread widely in England and the United States. Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe, though its traditions vary greatly from country to country.

Friend’s Day in Finland — Ystävänpäivä

In Finland, Valentine’s Day is known as Friend’s Day (Ystävänpäivä).

The Finnish word ystävä means «friend,» and päivä means «day.» This already reflects the essence of the celebration: friendship, kindness, and emotional support take center stage, rather than romantic love alone.

Friend’s Day has been celebrated in Finland since 1980, but it was officially added to the national calendar only in 1996. By Finnish standards, it is a relatively young holiday, yet it has quickly become very popular and widely embraced.

Traditions and Celebrations

According to statistics, Friend’s Day is the second most popular holiday in Finland for sending greeting cards, with Christmas taking first place.

In early February, Finnish shops are filled with:

  • tulips and roses
  • heart-shaped cakes and pastries
  • greeting cards wishing Hyvää Ystävänpäivää! («Happy Friend’s Day!»)

On this day, people congratulate not only close friends, but also colleagues, classmates, neighbors, and acquaintances — anyone they wish to thank for being part of their lives.

A Gentle Reminder

I invite you to think of your friends, buy a small cake, and visit old or new friends. Let Loneliness not be your only companion.

I would also like to share my favorite song by Tuure Kilpeläinen, fittingly titled «Ystävänpäivä» («Friend’s Day»). It is a slightly sad yet deeply touching song, where the singer’s companion is Loneliness (Yksinäisyys) — a quiet reminder of how important real human connection truly is.

Ystävänpäivä

Valentine's day

On sunnuntai, sä tulet luokseniIt's Sunday, you come to me
Heti aamulla, ehkä jo odotin sua.First thing in the morning, maybe I was expecting you.
Jaat kanssani lehden ja jäähtyneen kahvin. You share the paper and the cooled coffee with me.
Sä olet mun ystäväni, nimesi on Yksinäisyys. You're my friend, your name is Loneliness.

Sä oot mun, kun valot on sammuneet. You're mine when the lights have gone off.
Sä oot mun, kun pöytiä siivotaan. You're mine when the tables are cleaned.
Sä oot mun, se mitä viivan alle jää,You're mine, what's left under the line,
Kun muut ovat menneet.when the others have gone.
Mun juhannusheilani.You're my midsummer valentine.
Sä oot mun. Viimeinen valssini. You're my last waltz.
Sä oot mun. Voin syliisi mä painaa pään.I can lay my head on your lap.
Voin luottaa ystävään.I can trust a friend.
Sä luokseeni jäät.You'll stay with me.

Кadulla nuoripari.A young couple on the street.
Vaunuissa nukkuva lapsi.A sleeping child in the stroller.
Narussa ilmapallo sydämen muotoinen. A heart-shaped balloon on a string.
“Hyvää ystävänpäivää!” – huutaa naapurimummo. "Happy Valentine's day", yells the grandma next door.
Ja sä oot mun ystäväni uskollinen Yksinäisyys. And you're my loyal friend, Loneliness.

Mun vapauden hintani – sä oot mun. You're my price of freedom
Viimeinen naulani – sä oot mun. You're my last nail
Voin syliisi mä painaa pään,I can lay my head on your lap.
Voin luottaa ystävään.I can trust a friend.
Sä luokseeni jäät.You'll stay with me.

Ja jokainen päivä on ystävänpäivä.And every day is Valentine's day.
Ja sä oot mun, aina mun ikioma Yksinäisyys. And you're my, always my, very own, Loneliness.

I wish everyone happiness and good friends! ❤️
